What is UPF Apparel and Why is it Important?

Why Running Wild’s UPF Shirts are a Must Have for Your Summer Wardrobe!

In our beautiful beach-side community, being in the sun is a must during the summer time. But being sun-safe is just as important as being stylish. While sunscreen is often the first thing people think of for UV protection, it's not always the most convenient or consistent solution. That’s where UPF protected clothing comes in. If you’ve never considered adding UPF garments to your wardrobe, it might be time to rethink your sun protection strategy. This summer, Running Wild is here to make sure that you can be stylish, while also staying safe in the sun all day long!

     What is UPF Clothing?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, a rating system used for clothing that indicates how effectively a fabric blocks the sun’s UV radiation. There are many shirts that Running Wild offers  that have an effective UPF rating, typically 50 or higher. This means  the fabric allows only 1/50th (or 2%) of the sun’s rays to penetrate to the skin, effectively blocking out 98% of the harmful UVA and UVB rays. This is significantly more protection than a regular cotton T-shirt provides, typically with a UPF of around 5 - 8. This essential sun-gear is offered in a wide variety of fashion forward, runner-friendly styles including your favorite Running Wild house brand and apparel super partners such as rabbit, janji, lululemon and Vuori.

With this unmatched level of protection, UPF protected shirts are specially designed to be a summer essential for  anyone spending time outdoors  whether you're taking a run through the beautiful scenery of Fairhope, spending the day recovering on the white sandy beaches of Pensacola, or anything in between!

     Why Are UPF Shirts Important?

     1. Consistent, All Day Protection

Unlike sunscreen, which needs to be reapplied every two hours (or more often if you’re sweating or swimming), UPF shirts provide constant coverage as long as you’re wearing them. There's no risk of forgetting to reapply or missing a spot. It's a hassle free way to ensure you're protected all day long.

     2. Prevention of Skin Damage and Skin Cancer

Long term exposure to UV radiation is a major contributor to skin damage and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, clothing is the most effective form of sun protection. UPF shirts create a physical barrier that significantly reduces the risk of UV related skin damage. For people with sensitive skin or a history of skin cancer, these shirts can be a game changer.

     3. Comfort and Breathability

Running Wild’s UPF shirts are designed with both performance and comfort in mind. They’re lightweight, moisture wicking, and breathable, making them ideal for outdoor activities in the summer weather!

     A Sustainable Choice

Because UPF shirts reduce your reliance on chemical sunscreens—many of which contain water polluting ingredients like oxybenzone—they can be a more environmentally friendly option, especially for our community and the beautiful water we live by!

    Conclusion

Whatever activities you’re doing this summer, UPF protected shirts offer a smart, simple way to safeguard your skin without sacrificing comfort or style. Think of them as wearable sunscreen. Running Wild’s UPF collection is more than just a wardrobe upgrade; it’s an essential  investment in your health and wellbeing.
