Why Every Runner Should Consider Having a Dog!

As our team at Running Wild Fairhope prepares to partner with Daphne Animal Shelter for our adoption day event, we figured there is no better way to kick off the fun than talking about the top 5 benefits that runners get from having a running puppy partner!

    1. Built-In Accountability Partner

Let’s be honest: even the most dedicated runners have off days. A late night, hot day, or just feeling burned out can make skipping your run tempting. But when you have a dog sitting by the door, leash in mouth, tail wagging… it’s a lot harder to say no. Dogs thrive on routine and love exercise, which means they’ll keep you consistent. You’re not just running for yourself anymore; you’re running for them too.

    2. Improved Mental Health

Running is already known for its mood-boosting effects, but adding a dog into the mix can elevate that even more. Studies show that interacting with dogs lowers cortisol and increases levels of serotonin and oxytocin. A happy dog trotting by your side makes every run more fun!

    3. Enhanced Safety

Whether you're running in the early morning or at dusk, having a dog with you adds a layer of security. Dogs are naturally alert and protective, and their presence can deter unwanted attention or help you feel more confident when running in isolated areas. Some breeds are especially known for their protective instincts, making them excellent running companions for solo runners.

    4. Endless Motivation

Dogs don’t care if it’s raining or if your legs are sore, they’re always ready to run. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Watching your dog sprint through puddles or perk up at the sound of you grabbing their leash can reignite your own passion for running.

    5. Better Physical Fitness (for both of You)

Running regularly with your dog can improve cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and even speed. Dogs often push you to go farther or pick up the pace. And it’s not just good for you — regular running helps dogs maintain a healthy weight, improve joint health, and burn off extra energy (which can reduce unwanted behaviors at home).

So, whether you’re ready to adopt or just need some puppy love, our dog adoption day is perfect for anyone who loves dogs! Come and meet some awesome dogs at our Fairhope location on July 19, take them for a walk, and maybe even take home a four-legged friend (and running partner!)
